Osaka Shabu

Although they have not begun advertising yet, Osaka Shabu has been open about a week and we had to go check it out. We ordered beef and seafood shabu-shabu, which came with the prepared raw meats and a large plate of fresh vegetables for cooking in the boiling broth. We chose the spicy Szechuan broth, which was excellent. The inside has been recently renovated and is still waiting to be fully decorated, but the food and service was welcoming. Go try it out for yourselves!

Thanks for blogging about Osaka Shabu. My family and I have already been twice and we absolutely love it. We definitely prefer going there over the pricier version (that isn't better) in Chinatown - Shabu Zen.

We really enjoyed our dinner there! And we really want to encourage other local business owners help diversify the restaurants in Dot. With the size and diversity of Dorchester, it should be a destination for good food in the city.

Just happened by your blog by way of a google search for Irish groceries. Very nice, and a great document of the changing face of Dot.

Like our evenings in Kyoto, Osaka Shabu has elegant simplicity, abundant fresh foods, genuinely caring service -- but also superb low prices. Worth our trip from Chestnut Hill!. Also -- plenty of seating! We counted about 20 tables.

Even on a hot summer evening, the hot pot was refreshing and fun!

Service unlike any we've had in Boston: gentle, attentive, full of suggestions on the best choices, and playful instruction on just how long to let various foods (squid, thin-sliced pork, enoki and oyster mushrooms) simmer in our Chinese herbal broth. For appetizers, the takomaki were subtly flavored, lightly textured; gyoza dumplings had succulent meat; baby octopus tender in a Japanese barbecue sauce. For the shabu hot pot, we chose mixed veggies, squid, and pork, each one ultra fresh and tasty -- and so much that we cooked and took about 1/3 home for today's lunch.

After delicious desserts of lychee and longan milkshakes, our wonderful waitress brought a complimentary dish of fresh longans (she bought them that morning in Chinatown) and taught us how to enjoy them best with sips of their superb, authentically Japanese green tea. Their subtle flavor capped off a magical evening.

This is worth a trip from Salem or Plymouth! We've been to Japan and this brings back the best of it -- even though our waitress was Chinese, she knows Japan. Her gracious and attentive ways made a special meal even more extraordinary.
